I was under the impression from your older articles that this sort of simple method of calculating variance could not be applied to poker results. Can you clarify please?

much obliged

The problem with direct computation of variance used to be that poker records were generated by hand and tended to be grouped into arbitrary sized groups -- session results. Results were a mixture of one hour sessions, four hour sessions, etc.

That's still the case with live results.

But with online results we have basic data at the hand level, in which direct computation does apply.
